- Ingredients:
- 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
- 1⁄4 tsp. ground nutmeg
- 2 tbsp. sugar
- 4 tbsp. butter
- 4 eggs
- 1⁄4 cup milk
- 1⁄2 tsp. vanilla extract
- 8 slices challah, brioche, or white bread
Syrup Is Optional?
Yep. In fact, it’s optional twice because
- Real maple syrup is insanely expensive, and while it pays in many cases not to skimp on ingredients, I don’t want to spend that kind of money on maple syrup, because
- I prefer strawberry jam on my French toast anyway.
Combine cinnamon, nutmeg, and sugar in a small bowl and set aside.
In a 10- or 12-inch skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Remove from heat and whisk together cinnamon mixture, eggs and milk.
Add the vanilla last, after making sure the sugar and spices are completely dissolved (it will make the sugar and cinnamon clot up otherwise).
Pour into a shallow container, such as a pie plate. Dip bread in egg mixture. Fry slices until golden brown, then flip to cook the other side.
Serve with syrup or jam or whatevah ya likes.
